Frequently Asked Questions

A few of the most commonly asked questions, and no question is too small or too big, ask away!

WHAT LENGTHS OF FIBER CAN THE BELFAST MINI MILL PROCESS?

When we are creating cloud, batts, roving, and rug yarn our Mini Mill is capable of processing fiber of almost any length. When spinning, if the fiber is over 7 1/2″ in length, we simply cut it. We are processing 1″ Guanaco in Argentina and 8″ long Suri fiber regularly. We do, however, recommend for ease of processing that the optimum fiber length is between 1 1/2″ and 6 “.

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING CAN I EXPECT?

Training begins even before you decide to become a Belfast Mini Mill owner/operator. We recommend you visit us here in PEI to spend a day or two with us, processing fiber in our mill. When you purchase a Mill, we commission the equipment on your site, and give extensive training in processing, maintenance, and safety. When you are satisfied we leave you to practice for a period of time; usually a couple of months. We then stop back to your site to answer any questions that might have arisen and to review the processes.

WHERE ARE THE MACHINES MANUFACTURED?

The Belfast Mini Mill is manufactured here, in North America. We use raw materials from Canada (25%) and the United States (75%). We employ numerous full time technicians, machinists, welders, and design personnel. Our manufacturing site is on a farm property in a small farming community called Belfast, Prince Edward Island, in Canada.

DOES THE BELFAST MINI MILL FUNCTION ON THE VARIOUS ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD?

The machinery is built at our manufacturing facility, to comply with other types of electrical systems. We have received approvals in safety, electrical, and mechanical in the EU.

IS THERE A BELFAST MINI MILL MANUAL OF OPERATION?

Yes; A manual covering, operation, maintenance, and safety is included with every mill, along with a USB that contains backup training and information.

WHAT SIZES OF YARNS CAN I MAKE?

You can make single plys from 10,000 yards per pound (fine thread) up to 100’s yards per pound (lopi yarns the size of your thumb), all on the same spinner. This is accomplished with fingertip controls and state of the art electronics.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES IT TAKE TO OPERATE A BELFAST MINI MILL?

Because Mini Mills can vary in size the number of mill workers can also vary. In an average Mill, processing an average throughput of 20 or 30 lbs per day, we recommend 2 1/2 people. We are proud to say that with about 100 Belfast Mini Mills in North America, (80 of which are in the United States) we directly provide employment to about 250 people and indirectly 1000’s.

HOW MUCH SPACE IS REQUIRED TO OPERATE A BELFAST MINI MILL?

An average size Mill consisting of about 10 pieces of machinery requires a minimum of 1000 square feet. You should consider future expansion, a washing and drying area, a collection room for the opener, and a fibre storage area.
